Why is doxycycline used ? Doxycycline is used to treat different types of infections including: Respiratory infection (chest, lung, or nose) urinary tract infection acne (pimples) eye infection Sexually transmitted diseases Malaria when chloroquine is ineffective It can also be used to prevent some types of infections. Do not take doxycycline : If you are allergic to the active substances or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Warnings and precautions : Tell your doctor about all of your health conditions, including: If you will be exposed to strong sunlight or ultraviolet rays. If you suffer from myasthenia gravis. If you suffer from liver or kidney problems. If you have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). If you have porphyria, a blood disorder. If you have severe diarrhea after prolonged use of antibiotics. Taking this medicine for longer than recommended can cause a second infection. Possible side effects : Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; Itch; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking; Unusual hoarseness or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is unknown. Other medicines and doxycycline Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, especially: Antacids Epilepsy medications (seizures) warfarin Oral contraceptives retinoid How to take doxycycline : This medicine is not recommended for children under the age of 8 years. Take this medication as directed by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass of water. If it causes an upset stomach, take it with food. The usual dose is 100-200 mg daily, depending on the condition of the infection. How to store doxycycline : Store at room temperature from 68 to 77 degrees F (20 to 25 degrees C). Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
